When Should You Stop Watering Your Trees and Garden During the Fall

Many people don’t know when they should stop watering their trees and plants during the fall.

When the calendar flips from the summer to fall, we pack away beach towels, swimsuits, and pool accessories. But what about your garden house? Our plants require attention the most during the hot days of summer. Wintertime brings a unique dry spell of its own. Once plant and tree beds are packed under ice and snow, roots could get thirsty. Hydrating plants right before the winter will help them cope. But, too much moisture around your roots when the ground is too cold could do more harm than good. So, what is the happy medium? Read on to learn more!

When to Stop Watering Trees During the Fall

If it is dry and has not rained in a few weeks, keep watering trees as they need it until the ground starts to freeze, which typically happens in late October or November if you experience an actual winter. Or if you’re located in a southern climate, the soil might not freeze until December, if at all. Plan on watering your trees until temperatures dip right into the 30s for a few days straight. If you do decide to water your trees or garden shrubbery, make sure the thermometer reads over 40 degrees.

When You Should Stop Watering Flowers in the Fall

Flowers also require a steady flow of moisture right up until the ground freezes in the late fall. Wind down the water as temperatures start to drop below 40 degrees. Many summer annual plants will die and freeze with the first or second-hand frost. As always, irrigate the perennials and annuals in the morning whenever you can! This way, the soil has time to soak it all in before the temperatures dip in the evening.
