A few trees can truly stand the test of time. There are also trees on our properties that hold a special place in our hearts. We can enjoy them for most of our lives as long as we take proper care of them. You might be wondering how you can fix your trees and boost their health again if they’re experiencing complications. Read on to learn how to keep your property’s trees healthy and strong!
Plant Your Tree in the Proper Position
Pick a tree that is meant for your area, then find a location that will get enough sun and provide you with enough space for its full-grown canopy. Before digging, make sure it is not too close to any power lines, underground utility lines, or your house. Last, do not plant it too deep! That is a big mistake that arborists from Harford Tree.
Water the Trees Properly
Just like any other type of plant, you need to water your trees! If it has not rained for a long time, check to see if your tree needs some water. Typically, mature trees need one inch of water a week. New trees will require somewhere between four to ten gallons every week during the first growing season or so.
Mulching
Mulch insulates tree roots, protecting them from lawn mower cuts and helping prevent dry soil. To reap these benefits, remove grass underneath your tree and spread around two to four inches of mulch. Be careful not to cover up the base of the trunk, though.
Fertilize Your Tree
In the forest, natural plant materials will feed the soil around the trees. However, in our yards, we rake and remove all of these natural nutrients, such as leaves and grass clippings. Fertilizers can solve this issue. Apply a slow-release fertilizer regularly to help release nutrients into the soil. Also, make sure you test the soil periodically to see if any essential elements are missing or are in short supply.
Tree Pruning
Correct tree trimming improves a tree’s structure while also removing deadwood that could be holding it back. Do some severe pruning when the tree is dormant and does not have leaves. Then, in the summer, focus on tidying them up and clearing out small, damaged, or dead twigs.
