What to Keep in Mind While Planting a Tree

What to Keep in Mind While Planting a Tree

There is plenty to keep in mind before planting a tree.

Trees offer various benefits to homeowners and the communities in which they live, from beauty and shade to privacy, windbreak, and even lower energy bills. However, these benefits can only be enjoyed when you plant the right tree in the correct location. That is because the space we have available for new trees will often dictate how well the tree will grow and how it’s managed over time. Matching the attributes of a species to its limitations on your site will ultimately decide how well your new tree delivers the benefits you wanted from your tree at the start. Read on to learn more!

Utilities Near Your Trees

Businesses and homes are usually surrounded by utilities on all sides. There are probably power, phone, cable, and internet lines either underground or overhead. Certainly, we have sewer, water, irrigation, and gas lines underground. Once urban foresters think of the “wrong tree in the wrong place,” the first image that will come to mind is a shaded tree planted right under a power distribution line, a tree that has been pruned repeatedly by a power company, so your lights remain on! Avoid planting spots that will eventually conflict with utility lines to make sure your tree reaches its full potential and lives a long and productive life.

Structures Near Your Trees

We usually place trees in our landscape to accent our house. Even though the tree is small, once we plant it, we know that it’ll grow and fill in a space, growth that could achieve our plans or not, depending on where we plant it relative to our home, other buildings on the property, or other infrastructure like driveways or walkways. Just like utilities, there are a few distance guidelines for planting trees close to structures that can reduce branch and root conflicts.

Soil Quality

Trees are not like people; they can’t get up and move once they have been planted. Trees are stuck in the soil where you plant them. You have probably read plant labels that describe the soil conditions for a species, typically something along the lines of deep and well-drained loamy soil. Make sure your soil is well taken care of before and after you plant the tree.
