What Do Your Property’s Trees Need to Stay Healthy?

If you want to keep your property’s trees in good health so they live a very long time, you might be wondering what needs to be done.

Some trees are able to stand the test of time, like many types of pine trees. Then of course, there are trees that hold a special place in each of our hearts. We can enjoy them for most of our lives if we take good care of them. If you want to keep your property’s trees in good health so they live a very long time, you might be wondering what needs to be done. Read on to learn about what your property’s trees need in order to stay healthy!

Planting Your Tree in the Proper Spot

Choose a tree meant for your property, then find an area that will get enough sun and provide enough space for it’s grown canopy. Before you start digging, make sure it is not too close to power lines, underground utility lines or your house. Last, do not plant it too deep! This is the number one mistake that many of our arborists see.

Watering Correctly

Just like other plants, you have to water your trees! If it has not rained for multiple weeks, check to see if your tree is in need of a drink. Typically, mature trees require one inch of water a week. New trees will require somewhere around four to ten gallons every week during the first growing season or so.

Mulching

Mulch insulates your tree roots, protects them from lawn mower cuts and also helps prevent dry soil. Help your tree reap the benefits by removing grass underneath the tree and spreading two to four inches of mulch. Be careful that you don’t cover the base of the tree trunk.

Fertilize the Trees

In a forest, natural plant materials feed the soil around your trees. But in our backyards, we rake and remove all these natural nutrients, like grass clippings and leaves. Fertilizer is the solution to this problem. Apply a slow-release fertilizer regularly to help release nutrients into the soil. Also, test your soil periodically to see any elements are missing or are starting to run low.

Tree Pruning

Correct tree trimming improves a tree’s structure while also removing deadwood that could be holding them back. Do some serious pruning once the tree is dormant and does not have any leaves. Then in the summertime, focus on cleaning up and clearing out small or dead twigs.
