The Top Trees to Plant for Your Fence Lines

Read on to find out some of the best trees to plant for your fence line.

If you do not want to compromise your landscaping but want to add a bit of privacy and color to your landscape, trees are a great addition to your property. Whether you are looking for narrow trees for a fence line or trees that create a bit of privacy, you have different options that can be both beautiful and practical. But when you approach a garden center or nursery, you may find the options are endless. Which are the best types of trees to plant along your fence line for privacy? Which are the best small trees for your fence line? What are the best narrow trees for a fence line that fit in your specific conditions or climate?

Eastern Redcedar

Eastern redcedars are great trees for windbreaks. They are drought, heat, and cold-resistant. They are also tolerant of many different soils and salt, which makes them great for fence lines close to driveways, roads, and sidewalks. These trees can mature at 40 to 50 feet tall with an eight- to 20-foot spread.

Rocky Mountain Juniper

Rocky Mountain junipers are native to western North America. It grows in a columnar shape with blue-green or dark green foliage and loves full sun, but it could also take to partial shade. You are able to use these trees to create both single or multiple windbreaks. These trees usually reach a mature height of 20 to 30 feet with about an eight to 12-foot spread.

Arborvitae Thuja

This columnar tree is versatile and a natural choice for windbreaks, making excellent hedges or screens. Their scale-like leaves are packed together in overlapping rows on branches, and they can change from bright green during the summer to rich green during the winter. These trees prefer full sunlight. They can grow about 40 to 60 feet tall with a 10 to 15-foot spread.

Italian Cypress

This tall, columnar evergreen has blue-green needles and are drought-tolerant once they’ve grown. Add the Italian cypress to your fence line in full sun or for a tall vertical accent. It prefers dry conditions, so don’t try planting it in places with higher humidity and rainfall.
