Tree maintenance may seem like a drag, but it’s not so bad if you know what you’re doing!
It’s summer and we are spending lots of time outside. Most people give their gardens lots of attention in summer. We need to remember that our trees need some of that attention too. Here are a couple of tips to help you help your tree maintenance this summer.
Stick to a Schedule
A good rule of thumb you should remember is that one gallon of water is equal to about one inch of rainfall. This is how much water each of your trees needs every week. If you water trees on a Sunday one week, you should water them again the following Sunday. Plants thrive on a schedule, even huge ones like trees. It is also very important to remember that smaller trees need more attention. You get a bit of leeway with older, more established trees. Younger trees require more tree maintenance while they get used to the environment they’re in and establish themselves.
Time of Day
Summer is by far the hottest time of year which can make tree maintenance hard. When water gets hot enough, it turns to steam and evaporates away. Don’t water your trees during the hottest part of the day (typically some time mid-afternoon). This is basically just a waste of water. The heat of the sun will steal all the water away. Instead, water early in the morning or after the sun goes down in the late evening. Watering early in the morning enables trees to have a drink before the heat of the day sets in and the water evaporates. Watering after sundown gives your trees all night to absorb the water.
Your Mulch is Your Friend
We’ve already established that the hot summer sun will dry out your soil quickly, so how do you prevent that? Mulch is here to help! Putting a 2-4 inch layer of mulch at the base of your trees will act as a barrier to help shade the soil and let your trees get as much water as possible.
