When you are doing a construction project, you want to do everything you can to help protect your trees!
Trees are way more beneficial to your house’s landscape. They add shade, cool the yard when it is hot and sunny, and even block out the wind during the winter to keep your property warm. Trees are also beautiful additions, adding flowers during the spring, greenery in the summer, show-stopping color in the fall, and even winter interest. This is why when you are doing a construction project, you want to do everything you can to help protect your trees so they suffer no harm during the process. Trees stand so strong that you may forget that they require protection, but there are a few common injuries that could happen, depending on the extent of your construction project. Read on to learn how to protect your trees during the construction project!
Root Pruning
Tree roots could be damaged during construction projects through compaction from equipment, grade changes, and even by being cut through excavation and digging trenches. Your tree’s roots could extend as far as two to three times the width of the drip line, or the farthest point where a tree’s branches are growing. If you look at a tree’s crown and drop an imaginary line down on the ground, this could give you an idea of how to locate its drip line. To help protect roots from unnecessary damage once they have to be cut in order to dig a tree, tree protection during construction work could include carefully digging with supersonic air tools followed by carefully hand pruning of your roots. This can be done by a certified arborist to help ensure roots are cared for correctly, and tree stability and health will remain intact.
Root Protection Matting and Root Aeration Matting
The goal of tree root protection in construction is to make sure that around 70 percent of a tree’s root zone isn’t impacted. This is because root loss will cut down the tree’s supply of nutrients and water. The best way to do this is to avoid doing any work or stacking up heavy materials, such as lumber, within a tree protection zone. By changing the grade around tree roots, removing soil, and dumping additional soil on top, you will also undermine part of a tree’s anchors, which are the roots, by removing or smothering them.
